If you're thinking of heading away for the Christmas break, now is the time to book ahead for your pet's boarding stay. However not all boarding facilities are equal.

Kennels and Catteries - Types of Accommodation
It pays to do your homework. Different types of pet accommodation which vary in style and price depending on the quality, service and the length of your pet’s stay.
If you are only going away for one or two nights, your dog or cat may be perfectly comfortable in a smaller cage or run. However, if you are planning on being away for any length of time you should consider options for exercise, access to the outdoors, mental stimulation and veterinary support.
Here at Lakeside Vet Centre, we pride ourselves on our clean and modern facilities, spacious cages and large exercise and play areas. Being a veterinary clinic, we have vets and nurses on hand to keep a close eye on your furry friend and to address any health concerns while you’re on holiday.
For stays longer than 1 night, dogs will enjoy a free bath before they go home and for stays longer than 7 days, dogs will also receive a complimentary health check by a vet nurse.
Taking a Tour
Before making a booking or paying a deposit, ask for a tour of the facility, paying particular attention to:
- General cleanliness
- Are the facilities in good repair?
- Well-maintained grounds and exercise areas
- Appropriate shelter and bedding
- Arrangements for exercise - frequency and types of activity
- Staff experience, knowledge and professionalism
- After-hours and emergency contacts
Ask if there is a veterinarian on-site or on call in case of emergency.
Let your regular vet know about your pet’s stay and ensure that the kennel or cattery has your vet’s contact information.
If there are any health conditions which require monitoring or medication to be administered, it is important to make these arrangements with your accommodation provider before you leave on your holiday.
Similarly, if your pet is on a prescription diet or has special dietary requirements you should establish upfront who is going to provide the food and if there are any additional costs.

Agree on which issues you wish to be notified about and the method of contact e.g. phone, email or sms.
Will you be permitted to call for progress reports on your pet, and during which hours?
Reviews and Recommendations
Before committing to a booking, check online reviews for the facility and ask your friends, neighbours or veterinarian for a recommendation.
If there are any red flags or alarm bells ringing, you will have an opportunity to address your concerns with the boarding service or to choose another provider.
